Joaquin Castro, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 20th district since 2013, has been vocal about recent actions taken by former President Donald Trump's administration. Through a series of tweets, Castro expressed his concerns over policies and decisions that he believes negatively impact American citizens.
On March 14, 2025, Joaquin Castro criticized former President Trump for offering a "gold card" for citizenship to individuals who can pay $5 million. He contrasted this with the situation of a "10-year-old girl with brain cancer—a U.S. citizen," whom he claims Trump is not allowing to stay in Texas for her treatment. "Trump has offered a 'gold card' for citizenship to anyone who can pay $5 million dollars. And yet, he won’t let a 10-year-old girl with brain cancer—a U.S. citizen—remain in Texas with her family to receive her treatment. It’s despicable."
The following day, on March 15, 2025, Castro urged the administration to allow the young girl's family to be granted humanitarian parole so they could return to the United States for necessary medical care. He stressed the urgency of reversing what he sees as harmful policy decisions that endanger lives: "I hope that Trump allows this 10-year-old’s family to be on humanitarian parole so that they can come back to the U.S. and get their daughter—a U.S. citizen— the care she needs. She will die because of what this Administration did."
On March 16, 2025, Castro commented on broader legislative measures affecting national security and civil liberties in wartime contexts by highlighting issues surrounding the Alien Enemies Act: "We must continue to fight back. The Alien Enemies Act is a wartime measure that has left a very dark stain on our nation’s history."
