Lloyd Doggett, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas' 37th district, has recently voiced his concerns through a series of tweets regarding actions taken by former President Donald Trump and the House GOP. Doggett, who has been in office since 1995 after replacing J.J. Pickle, expressed his views on health coverage funding cuts, legislative proposals to honor Trump, and international relations involving Ukraine.
On February 19, 2025, Doggett criticized Trump's decision to cut funding for nonprofit counselors aiding consumers in health coverage enrollment. He highlighted the impact on organizations like one in Austin that assists thousands of Central Texans: "Trump eliminated nearly all funding for unbiased, nonprofit counselors assisting consumers in enrolling in health coverage..."
Later that day, Doggett commented on a bill filed by the House GOP to declare Trump's birthday a national holiday. He drew parallels with North Korean practices and expressed concern over Trump's influence within the party: "Straight from the North Korean playbook honoring its 'Great Leader,' House GOP filed a bill to make Trump's birthday a national holiday."
In another tweet on February 19, Doggett condemned Trump's remarks about Ukrainian President Zelensky. He described these attacks as detrimental to Ukrainians and allies defending democracy while benefiting adversaries: "Trump’s outrageous attacks on Zelensky are shameful to Ukrainians who’ve died for their country & allies who’ve defended democracy."
