The board of trustees of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (UCISD) will consider the approval of the schematics for the replacement of Robb Elementary School at its meeting on Monday, per a report from Austin NBC affiliate KXAN that was run by Houston CW affiliate KIAH.
KXAN reported that Robb students and families had the opportunity to view the renderings for the new campus last month.
Robb was the site of a mass shooting that claimed the lives of 19 students and two educators nearly a year ago.
According to KXAN, the new campus will include a memorial to the 21 victims.
San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT reported that UCISD Moving Forward Foundation, which was formed in the aftermath of the May 24, 2022, tragedy, presented a video to the community ahead of a planned groundbreaking in the summer.
“The design of the school – making sure that there’s plenty of natural light, the colors are calming, they bring in the outside world into the campus,” Tim Miller, who heads the foundation, said, according to the station.
Miller told KSAT said an appointed committee and the project’s architecture firm, Huckabee, worked to ensure the school complies with safety and security standards and has a trauma-informed design.
According to San Antonio CBS affiliate KENS, the shuttered current Robb school will eventually be demolished.
The station reported that its successor will educate second, third and fourth graders, or a total of 800 students, with an opening projected for two to three years later.
Citing KENS, San Antonio Standard reported that UCISD won’t hold classes from May 23 to 25 in observance of the one-year anniversary of the shooting.
UCISD Interim Superintendent Gary Patterson notified the district of the closures in a memo.
“[We] have profound respect for the one-year mark and a focus on the safety of our students and staff,” Patterson, who took the helm after the departure of Dr. Hal Harrell late last year, said in the internal correspondence.
