Lloyd Doggett, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas' 37th district, shared his views on NATO, trade policies, and recent actions by prominent figures on social media. Doggett's commentary remains an expression of his concern over international and domestic policies impacting the United States.
In a tweet dated April 5, 2025, Doggett highlighted the historical significance of NATO, stating that it "was established 76 years ago to safeguard freedom and democracy against the dictatorship of the Soviet Union." He emphasized the importance of not allowing former President Trump, referred to as "the Great Appeaser," to compromise with Russian President Putin and neglect allied commitments.
On the economic front, Doggett addressed the effects of tariffs imposed by Trump with a focus on Central Texans and small businesses. In his April 5, 2025, tweet, he outlined the ramifications as including "higher costs on food, houses, cars & more, job layoffs and lower wages,... [and] unstable 401k plans." He criticized Trump's engagement in leisure activities like golfing while "families suffer economically due to Trump's trade war" and accused Republicans of remaining silent.
Further critiquing actions by notable public figures, Doggett described a joint decision-making process of former President Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk as "more casually cruel 'fire first, then aim' nonsense," in another tweet from the same day.
Doggett, born in Austin, Texas in 1946, has represented Texas's 37th district in Congress since 1995. His academic background includes a BA and JD from the University of Texas at Austin. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in the Texas Senate from 1973 to 1985.
