Brooks Academies Of Texas issued the following announcement.
High School students from Brooks Academies are among the 100 youth from across Texas that attended the Texas Youth Preparedness Camp, a week-long camp that prepares youth for a crisis with extensive training.
"The camp’s aim is to prepare youth to take charge in their community in times of crisis. Earl Smith is a mentor for the Texas Youth Preparedness Camp. He says, “It’s not just personal preparedness, but the family, their neighbors, their communities. They also get some additional training in leadership, teamworking."
The students learned how to properly use emergency equipment and also how to improvise when you don't have the right tools. Amy Gibson from San Antonio explained what happened when they couldn’t find any triage tape. “Triage tape is where we assert whether they are minor, immediate or delayed,” she said. “That way we know who to go to first and who needs the most help. So currently we're using duct tape to simulate that."
It's important knowledge that they all plan to take home... and share. Hannah Speight from Waskom in far east Texas says, "I want to go home, take this to my community and just let everybody know that this helps, and everybody needs to be prepared."
Working under pressure can be hard when you're trying to lead people you just met. Katie McCormick from Austin found that out the hard way when she ended up leading her fellow participants. "Well, I was in charge,” she said. “And I learned How chaotic it can get."
It can be a thankless job. Katie says, “It's rough. It's a hard job. I understand why they get paid so much."
