In a series of tweets posted on April 2, 2025, U.S. Congress member Lloyd Doggett shared his perspectives on tax simplification, immigrant detention costs, and tariffs under the Trump administration. Doggett, who has been serving Texas's 37th district since 1995 after succeeding J. J. Pickle, is vocal about his legislative initiatives and critiques of prevailing government policies.
In an early afternoon post, Doggett highlighted his legislative proposal aiming to alleviate financial burdens associated with pursuing education. "We must simplify our tax code to help those willing to work for more education but who may need financial aid to get there. My bipartisan bill would make Pell Grants entirely tax-free and expand eligibility to cover childcare costs."
Later that day, Doggett criticized the financial expenditure on migrant detention under former President Trump. He commented on an alleged misuse of taxpayer dollars, stating "Trump has spent $40 MILLION so far to jail 400 migrants at Guantánamo Bay = $100,000 PER MIGRANT. A staggeringly cruel, inefficient use of taxpayer dollars. In search of waste, Elon Musk seems to have overlooked a big one."
In the evening, Doggett criticized Trump's trade policies regarding tariffs. Expressing skepticism, Doggett noted the contrast between Trump’s past promises compared to current policy outcomes. He remarked "Trump’s declaration that he 'couldn’t care less' if his damaging tariffs cause prices to go up is a mighty big reversal from his promise to bring down prices ‘drastically.’ His ‘Liberation Day’ only liberates dollars from Americans’ wallets with the added danger of liberating."
