Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) has submitted a community project funding request in Congress to establish and construct a new Veteran Excellence Center at the University of Texas-San Antonio (UTSA). The proposed center aims to support veteran and military-affiliated students throughout their tenure at UTSA by providing essential academic and career support services specifically designed for the military community.
Gonzales, who is a member of the House Appropriations Committee, is striving to secure $5.5 million for this initiative.
“As a 20-year Navy veteran, I am focused on helping my fellow veterans, servicemembers, and military families secure the resources they need to succeed," said Congressman Gonzales. "That is why I am proud to partner with UTSA in an effort to deliver a new center for veterans and military students to receive support services throughout their college careers."
San Antonio, often referred to as Military City USA, hosts several key military installations supporting a large military population. The establishment of a new Veteran Excellence Center at UTSA would significantly enhance educational outcomes for those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces.
"UTSA is a national leader in veteran research and support, and the university has been named one of the best schools for veterans consistently. I look forward to working alongside leadership at UTSA to get this important project over the finish line,” added Gonzales.
Expressing gratitude towards Congressman Gonzales's efforts, UTSA President Taylor Eighmy said, "I’m immensely grateful to Congressman Gonzales for including UTSA’s Veteran’s Excellence Center in his Community Project Funding request for fiscal year 2025.”
Eighmy further explained that the center aims to serve as a central point for coordinating support services, enhancing engagement, and improving success outcomes for military-affiliated students at UTSA and sister institutions across Texas. "With this support, we can ensure an environment that is most conducive to both learning and growth for veteran students in San Antonio and across Texas,” he added.
