San Antonio's public housing authority will receive almost $2.3 million in CARES Act funds through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Housing Choice Voucher program to help low-income Texans.
Vulnerable populations get help through the program to ensure they have access to proper housing, Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas) said.
“All Texans are battling the global pandemic, and they need continued assistance to make it through,” Hurd said. “The CARES Act has helped Americans in many ways, from aiding small businesses to increased testing, and it’s good to see it continues living up to what it was meant to do: Care for Americans nationwide.”
"This funding will provide additional resources to public housing authorities to make sure people have a decent, safe, and affordable place to call home," HUD Secretary Ben Carson said, noting the additional $472 million being awarded nationwide.
"These new funds are important and will go a long way to help low-income residents secure and retain affordable housing during this unprecedented time," Hunter Kurtz, Assistant Secretary for Public and Indian Housing, said.
Other public housing authorities in the following Texas cities were among those getting funding: El Paso - $879,000; Anthony - $66,000; Bexar County - $292,000; El Paso County - $25,000; Del Rio - $92,000; Eagle Pass - $58,000; Crystal City - $16,000; Devine - $6,000; Alpine - $6,000; Carrizo Springs - $13,000; Pearsall - $13,000; Dilley - $3,000; Cotulla - $6,000; Uvalde - $32,000; Terrell - $74,000; and Fort Stockton - $10,000.
