A Bexar County District Court’s recent decision calling for the city of San Antonio’s paid sick leave ordinance to come to an end has the support of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Paxton isn’t alone in taking his position, as at least a dozen business organizations have already filed suit against San Antonio trying to stop the rule in its tracks.
The Texas Business Coalition has previously reported the Associated Builders & Contractors of South Texas Inc.; Cardinal Senior Care LLC; Choice Staffing LLC; the San Antonio Manufacturers Association; and the San Antonio Restaurant Association have all signed on as plaintiffs in the suit.
“Our state is home to millions of hardworking people, and we welcome job creators with open arms,” Paxton posted on his website. “Texans deserve the opportunity to work throughout our state. That is precisely why the Texas Constitution prohibits cities from ignoring the will of voters and why I continue to fight to ensure the voters have the last say.”
In its ruling, the court said San Antonio’s sick leave ordinance more than likely conflicts with both the Texas Minimum Wage Act and the Texas Constitution, which prohibits towns from creating laws that control employee wages.
