Joaquin Castro mourns loss of Dr. Joe Bernal; addresses Philadelphia plane crashes

Joaquin Castro, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas' 20th district, shared his thoughts on recent events through a series of tweets. His messages addressed the passing of Dr. Joe Bernal and two plane crashes in Philadelphia.

On January 29, 2025, Castro expressed his sorrow over the death of Dr. Joe Bernal, a former Texas Legislature member known for his dedication to public education and equal opportunities. "I’m saddened by the passing of San Antonio’s Dr. Joe Bernal, a former member of the Texas Legislature who was passionate about great public schools and opportunity for all."

Continuing on January 29, Castro reflected on Dr. Bernal's legacy in education and public service while acknowledging their personal connection: "He was a trailblazer in education and public service and a longtime friend of my family. I’ll always be grateful for his work, and he will be missed."

On February 1, 2025, Castro conveyed his condolences regarding two plane crashes occurring within 48 hours in northeast Philadelphia: "Two horrific plane crashes in less than 48 hours. My condolences are with the victims and the families of those affected by today’s plane crash in northeast Philadelphia and I’m praying for the community."
