Congressman Tony Gonzales has announced that the Netherlands will repatriate seven sacred artifacts to the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Tribe. These objects were taken from the tribe nearly 150 years ago, in 1882. The congressman played a role in this process by urging the Department of State to assist with repatriation efforts and meeting with Dutch ambassador Birgitta Tazelaar.
Gonzales emphasized the cultural importance of these artifacts, stating, "Today is a historic and momentous day for the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Tribe. After much effort by many stakeholders, myself included, the Netherlands has agreed to return several sacred artifacts back home to the Pueblo where they belong. These sacred objects are of deep cultural significance to Tigua heritage, traditions, ceremonies, and identity."
He also expressed gratitude towards those who contributed to this achievement, including Governor Michael Silvas and Lt. Governor Adam Torres. Gonzales looks forward to continuing his work with the Pueblo as these items are returned.
