Lloyd Doggett, a long-serving U.S. Congressman representing Texas' 37th district, has voiced his opposition to House Resolution 9495 through a series of tweets. Doggett, who has been in Congress since 1995 after succeeding J.J. Pickle, is known for his active role in legislative debates and his educational background from the University of Texas at Austin.
On November 20, 2024, Doggett expressed satisfaction with Ben & Jerry’s advocacy against H.R. 9495, characterizing it as a "Half Baked" Republican initiative. He stated: "Pleased Ben & Jerry’s whipping for a 'NO' vote on H.R. 9495, rejecting 'Half Baked' GOP power grab." Emphasizing the importance of free speech, he remarked that while "ice cream should be frozen," free speech "should never be chilled."
The following day, November 21, Doggett invited his audience to watch him lead the opposition on the House Floor against the bill, which he argued would empower former President Trump with authoritarian tools. He noted that nearly 300 civil society groups are advocating for a rejection of the proposal: "TUNE IN: Soon, you can see me leading the opposition on the House Floor to HR 9495..."
In another tweet posted on the same day, Doggett specifically criticized the potential for Trump to unilaterally revoke non-profit status under this bill: "Trump should not have the power to unilaterally remove their non-profit status."
