SAN ANTONIO – TheSan Antonio Parks and Recreation Department recently celebrated the opening of the newStanley Spigel Trailhead. The trailhead, located in District 7 on the city’s northwest side, provides parking and connects the community to the French Creek Greenway and Nani Falcone Park.
The project was built on approximately 9-acres of land donated by the Spigel family and features low impact features such as stone and a native plant bioswalethat filters stormwater, along with accessible and permeable parking stalls. Additional trailhead amenities include drinking fountain, signage, bike racks, bicycle repair station, trash cans, port-a-potty, landscaping, tree plantings and irrigation.
Funding sources for the project included approximately $854,000 sales tax venue funds and $243,000 in tree mitigation funds.
The Parks and Recreation Department maintains a growing network of more than 100 miles of hike and bike trails that comprise of the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trail System. The Greenway trails are open from sunrise to sunset and wind through natural landscapes along many of San Antonio’s waterways including Salado Creek, Leon Creek, Medina River, Westside Creeks, and Tributary Creeks.
