Task force launched in Leon Valley in an effort to stop human trafficking, especially in massage businesses

Police

After Leon Valley police received several complaints about possible human trafficking, a task force has been developed in an effort to stop the wave from spreading, News 4 San Antonio reported.

A massage parlor, Sunshine Massage, was one of many businesses that raised red flags for residents who were worried about sexual trafficking in the area.

Now therapists in the city are required to pass a background check and receive training offered by the city.

“One of the unique things we put in ours was, they had to be a standalone business, because we were getting complaints from other business owners in those shopping centers,” Leon Valley Police Chief Joe Salvaggio said in the report.

Texas lawmakers green-lighted a regulation via the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) that says no one is allowed to live inside of a massage parlor.

New students also have to get a permit to practice.

"Now, when you get a license, you have to be fingerprinted,” said Tela Mange, a public information officer with TDLR.

Mange added that the regulations are in effort to stop individuals from other states from trying to come into Texas and launch a massage business with ease.
