On December 14, 2023, Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) played a pivotal role in the final passage of the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The NDAA, a comprehensive national security package, included several provisions that were championed by Congressman Gonzales for the benefit of his constituents in TX-23.

One of the key accomplishments for Congressman Gonzales was the inclusion of his provision to grant Border Patrol Agents in TX-23 an increase in their overtime pay. This provision will allow qualifying agents to receive thousands of dollars in additional compensation, recognizing their tireless efforts in protecting our borders. Congressman Gonzales expressed his pride in this achievement, stating, "Border Patrol Agents have been working around the clock, and they deserve to be fairly compensated. I am proud that my provision to grant them additional overtime pay was included in this legislation."

Furthermore, Congressman Gonzales successfully advocated for an increase in funding for the Family Separation Allowance (FSA) from $250 to $400 per month. The FSA is a critical support system for servicemembers whose family members cannot live with or near them at their permanent duty station. By securing this funding increase, Congressman Gonzales has ensured that eligible servicemembers will receive a $150 per month boost, providing much-needed relief to military families. He emphasized the significance of this accomplishment, stating, "I am also proud to have delivered a funding increase for military families who cannot serve together—the Family Separation Allowance has not increased since 2004. With the passage of the NDAA, servicemembers eligible for FSA funding will feel much-needed relief soon."

In addition to these provisions, Congressman Gonzales played a role in securing funding for various military installations in TX-23. Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland (JBSA-Lackland) received $158 million, while Fort Bliss in El Paso was allocated $74 million. These investments will contribute to the enhancement of military capabilities and infrastructure in the region.

Congressman Gonzales, a 20-year Navy veteran, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the well-being of servicemembers and their families. He stated, "As a 20-year Navy veteran, taking care of the men and women in our military and those protecting our homeland is a top priority of mine. The FY24 NDAA strengthens our national security efforts, delivers for our servicemembers and their families, and enhances TX-23’s military installations."

Other provisions secured by Congressman Gonzales in the FY24 NDAA include $20 million for the completion of a Child Development Center, $48 million for a new Cyber Operations Center, and $90 million for a new Chapel in San Antonio for America’s Airmen.

Through his diligent efforts and unwavering commitment to his constituents, Congressman Tony Gonzales has successfully secured important wins and supported the passage of the Defense Authorization Package. His provisions will not only strengthen national security but also provide much-needed support to Border Patrol Agents and military families.
