UNIVERSITY OF INCARNATE WORD: Charlotte Han Sharp Passes After Lengthy Illness

Stroke

University of Incarnate Word issued the following announcement.

It is with deep sadness that we share that Mrs. Charlotte Han Sharp, the wife of John Sharp, Chancellor of The Texas A&M University System, has passed away following a lengthy illness.

Born in Temple, Texas in 1953, Charlotte grew up in Austin along with her two brothers, Robert Dale Han Jr. and Hampden Gregory Han. In 1977, she graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor of science in home economics, majoring in textiles and clothing, before marrying John Sharp in 1978. She was a close partner in her husband's long career in politics and public service since his election to the Texas House of Representatives in 1978, the year they married. Her life was guided by her faith and framed many of her volunteer and community service and humanitarian and philanthropic efforts focused on women, children, and young people. As an influential fundraiser for various organizations, she raised unprecedented funds to support students, including the Texas Children's Hospital and Dell Children's Medical Center. Throughout her life, Charlotte shared her talents and generosity of spirit, including serving as the Honorary Chair of the 2015 Magnolia Tea, where she raised a record amount for scholarships for Texas A&M University medical students. In the early 1990s, Charlotte and Chancellor Sharp worked with United Jewish Appeal to relocate hundreds of Jewish families from Russia to Israel.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 17, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 603 Church Ave., in College Station, Texas. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, December 18, at St. Mary Cathedral in Austin, Texas, with graveside services at The Texas State Cemetery immediately following. The Friday service will be live-streamed and can be viewed at http://smcaustin.org/sharp

Please join the Texas A&M-San Antonio community as we keep Chancellor Sharp and his family in our thoughts and prayers.
