Lloyd Doggett, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 37th district, has expressed his concerns regarding potential military actions against Iran through a series of tweets. Doggett, who has been serving in Congress since 1995 after replacing J.J. Pickle, addressed these issues in light of current geopolitical tensions involving former President Donald Trump.
On June 18, 2025, Doggett stated, “Speaking to @KVUE about our War Powers Resolution to block Trump from dragging us into conflict with a despicable regime in Iran.” He emphasized that any action taken by Trump should focus on striking an agreement to prevent Iranian nuclear weapons rather than initiating an airstrike, which could provoke retaliation.
The following day, on June 19, 2025, Doggett tweeted about the historical lessons from past conflicts: “Those urging Trump to attack Iran appear to have learned nothing from the war that was supposed to be so easy in Iraq 22 years ago.” He highlighted the human and financial costs of the Iraq war, noting it resulted in over 4,000 American lives lost and more than $1 trillion spent over nine years.
In another tweet on June 19, Doggett added, “I strongly opposed that war as I oppose an attack today.” While acknowledging his opposition to Iran’s government, he warned of the potential consequences if Iran retaliates against U.S. military forces in the Middle East and how this could lead to calls for further escalation.
Lloyd Doggett is known for his educational background from the University of Texas at Austin and his long-standing political career both in the Texas Senate and U.S. Congress. Born in Austin in 1946 and currently residing there at age 76, he continues to actively participate in legislative discussions concerning international relations.
