Lloyd Doggett, who has represented Texas’s 37th District in the U.S. Congress since 1995, recently shared updates regarding his new role and ongoing policy concerns on social media. Doggett, a long-serving congressman with a background in law and public service, posted several messages reflecting both his recent appointment and his stance on current legislative issues.
On July 14, 2025, Doggett announced his appointment to an international organization dedicated to human rights, stating: “Honored to represent our vibrant international city in a new way through my appointment to the U.S. Helsinki Commission, an international organization founded upon the defense of human rights and fundamental freedoms.”
In a subsequent post on July 14, 2025, Doggett addressed the broader significance of this commission during turbulent political times: “With an authoritarian president at home and so many troubling conflicts abroad, this Commission offers me another forum for engaging with its mission of democracy promotion, international cooperation, and peaceful conflict resolution.”
Later that day, Doggett criticized recent legislative developments supported by Republican lawmakers. On July 14, 2025 he wrote: “Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill is a real setback for our country, taking from working Americans to give to the richest few. Spoke to @VelshiMSNBC about how Trump and Republicans are paying for billionaire tax breaks by raising costs on health insurance premiums, electric rates…”
Doggett was born in Austin in 1946 and continues to reside there. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BA in 1967 and earned his JD from the same institution in 1970. Prior to joining Congress in 1995—succeeding J.J. Pickle—he served in the Texas Senate from 1973 to 1985.
