Lloyd Doggett, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 37th district, recently shared his views on several pressing issues via social media. Doggett, who has been serving in Congress since 1995 after succeeding J.J. Pickle, expressed concerns about international conflict, healthcare funding, and veterans’ rights.
On June 18, 2025, Doggett announced that he and his colleagues filed a War Powers Resolution aimed at preventing former President Trump from initiating military action against Iran. He stated: “Today, together with colleagues, we filed a War Powers Resolution to prohibit Trump from engaging in war with Iran.” He attributed this move to what he perceives as Trump’s “weakness” and the influence of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu over him.
Later that day, Doggett criticized a Republican legislative proposal that would cut funding for Planned Parenthood. In his post, he emphasized the broader implications beyond abortion services: “Republicans’ big ugly bill would defund Planned Parenthood.” He warned that such actions could jeopardize access to birth control, STI testing, cancer screenings, and other health services for millions of Americans.
In another statement on June 18th, Doggett addressed the treatment of veterans under Trump’s administration. He accused Trump of undermining veterans’ freedoms by allowing VA doctors to deny healthcare based on political disagreements: “Our veterans made immense personal sacrifices to protect our freedoms—freedoms which Trump seeks to strip away.” This commentary highlights his disapproval of policies he believes betray those who have served in the military.
Born in Austin in 1946 and an alumnus of the University of Texas at Austin with both a BA and JD degree, Lloyd Doggett has dedicated much of his life to public service both at the state level as a Texas Senator from 1973-1985 and nationally as a Congressman.
