Doggett, who has served in Congress since 1995 and was previously a member of the Texas Senate, is known for his involvement in political discourse.
On April 23, 2025, Doggett questioned the practicality and morality of a decision by Trump’s Department of Justice to rescind funds intended to address gun violence, opioid addiction, and aid for crime victims. He criticized the Republican Party’s silence on the matter, asking, “In what world is this a good idea?” as he condemned the act as cruel.
Later the same day, Doggett criticized Trump’s stance concerning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. He pointed out that Trump demanded significant concessions from Ukraine while making no such demands of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Doggett accused Trump of complicating efforts to investigate Russian war crimes by dismantling investigative measures. As he put it, “While demanding Ukraine surrender Crimea & any possibility of NATO membership, Trump continues to demand nothing of Putin.”
In a subsequent tweet early on April 24, 2025, Doggett reiterated his support for impeaching Trump, recalling his previous votes for impeachment. However, he expressed skepticism about the process moving forward due to the Republican control of the House. Doggett stated, “As I have publicly stated in my town halls and rallies, I support Trump’s impeachment, just as I have twice voted previously to impeach him.”
