Lloyd Doggett, U.S. Congressman representing Texas’ 37th district since 1995, posted a series of statements on social media criticizing former President Donald Trump’s policies and actions, focusing on economic and legal impacts for Americans.
On April 8, 2026, Doggett addressed the financial burden he attributes to Trump’s policies: “Every Texan pulling up to a gas pump is paying the Trump War Tax. At the grocery store. At the airport. Even on Amazon, where 3.5% is being added to every purchase. This war isn’t free, it’s costing billions, and you are paying the price.”
The following day, April 9, 2026, Doggett commented on Trump’s treatment of individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol attack: “Trump pardoned Jan. 6 violent insurrectionists, called them heroes, and gave them government jobs. Now those criminals are suing the brave police officers who defended the Capitol.Trump makes sure to reward those that commit crimes for him, while his Republican supplicants in”
Later that day, Doggett criticized proposed changes to pharmaceutical tariffs: “After insisting there is ‘no inflation,’ Trump is moving to increase costs even further with a new 100% tariff tax on pharmaceuticals, threatening to double the cost of many drugs. Sick Americans will pay the price — literally.”
Doggett has represented Texas’s 37th district since defeating Jenny Garcia Sharon in both the 2022 and 2024 general elections by significant margins (76.8% in 2022 and 74.2% in 2024). He succeeded J.J. Pickle in Congress after previously serving in the Texas Senate from 1973 to 1985 and has resided in Austin since his birth there in 1946.
