Lloyd Doggett, a seasoned politician representing Texas’ 37th district in the U.S. Congress, has been vocal about his concerns regarding recent legislative developments. Doggett, who has served in Congress since 1995 after succeeding J.J. Pickle and previously served in the Texas Senate from 1973 to 1985, expressed his apprehensions through a series of tweets.
On July 2, 2025, Doggett highlighted economic disparities he perceives in a proposed Republican bill. He stated that under what he termed as “Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill,” those at the top would receive benefits “390x” greater than Americans earning $50,000 or less. Later that day, Doggett addressed healthcare concerns specific to Texas. He pointed out that Texas already leads the nation with the highest number of uninsured citizens and warned that this situation could deteriorate further if former President Trump’s proposed bill is enacted. According to a report by the Joint Economic Committee cited by Doggett, an additional “1,671,965 Texans will likely lose access to a family physician and essential medications.” This statement was made on July 2 and can be viewed here.
In another tweet posted on July 2, Doggett criticized Republicans for allegedly succumbing to Trump’s influence rather than protecting constituents’ access to essential services like healthcare and food assistance. He quoted an unnamed GOP Senator who reportedly said that “this bill will betray the promise Donald Trump made.” The full tweet is available here.
Born in Austin in 1946 and an alumnus of the University of Texas at Austin where he earned both his BA and JD degrees, Lloyd Doggett continues to reside in Austin while serving his congressional duties.
