Lloyd Doggett, U.S. Congressman representing Texas’ 37th district since 1995, has recently used his Twitter account to comment on legislative developments and political issues, including actions by House Republicans, Donald Trump’s stance on nonprofits, and a meeting with the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work.
On May 22, 2026, Doggett posted: “Republicans just stopped the House from voting to rein in Trump and end his reckless war in Iran. Because they knew they’d lose.
Families are struggling to afford gas and groceries, but Trump doesn’t “think about Americans’ financial situation” and apparently neither do his GOP”.
Later that same day, Doggett drew a parallel between Russian President Vladimir Putin’s approach to non-government organizations and former President Donald Trump’s rhetoric regarding watchdog groups. He wrote, “In Russia, Vladimir Putin brands watchdog non-government organizations as ‘extremist’ and drives them out of existence.
Now Donald Trump is following that same playbook—threatening to crack down on nonprofits like Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (@CREWcrew).”
On May 24, 2026, Doggett highlighted an event in Washington D.C.: “A pleasure welcoming @UT_SocialWork in Washington D.C. for a conversation around education policy, the vital role social workers play in our communities, and the hope for essential change, which can be achieved only through greater engagement in this year’s vital election.”
Doggett was born in Austin, Texas in 1946 and continues to reside there. He earned both his BA (1967) and JD (1970) from the University of Texas at Austin. Before entering Congress in 1995—replacing J.J. Pickle—he served in the Texas Senate from 1973 to 1985. In recent elections for Texas’s 37th congressional district, he defeated Jenny Garcia Sharon by significant margins: winning over 74% of the vote in both the 2022 and 2024 general elections.
