Lloyd Doggett, a seasoned member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 37th district since 1995, has recently taken to social media to express his views on current Republican policies regarding taxation and energy. Born in Austin, Texas in 1946, Doggett is an alumnus of the University of Texas at Austin where he earned both his undergraduate and law degrees.
On May 13, 2025, Doggett critiqued the Republican party for their tax bill which he argues benefits billionaires disproportionately. In his tweet, he stated: “Republicans are flummoxed as I call out their efforts to hide the full impact of their tax bill gifting new tax breaks to billionaires. They voted down my objection on a party line, but the naked hypocrisy is exposed.” He also noted what he describes as a circular response from GOP members.
Later that day, Doggett commented on another aspect of the GOP’s policy in a subsequent tweet posted at 21:36 UTC. He expressed concern over how the tax bill impacts clean energy developers by raising costs and potentially hindering investments in clean energy projects already underway. “GOP tax bill blindsides clean energy developers–many with projects already in construction,” he tweeted.
In another post made early on May 14, Doggett criticized Republicans for adding significantly to the national deficit through financial benefits skewed towards high earners. He wrote: “Republicans add trillions of dollars to our deficit to give those who earn more than $1 million per year 310x the benefit of those who earn $50,000 per year.” Reflecting on former President Trump’s era, he added: “In Trump’s ‘golden age,’ the billionaires get the gold, the rest get crumbs.”
Serving since replacing J.J. Pickle in Congress, Lloyd Doggett continues to be an outspoken voice from Texas with a background in state legislation having served previously in the Texas Senate.
