Lloyd Doggett, a long-standing member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas’s 37th district, shared several viewpoints on social and political developments in a series of tweets. He has been in Congress since 1995, succeeding J.J. Pickle, and has a legal background with degrees earned from the University of Texas at Austin.
On April 28, 2025, Doggett expressed his support for over 200 colleges, including St. Edward’s in Austin, who are actively defending educational values against what he describes as escalated assaults by Donald Trump. “As Trump escalates assaults on higher ed, I applaud 200+ colleges, like St. Edward’s in Austin, standing up for students & truth. While rank-and-file GOP are silent & Texas GOP leaders pressure state colleges, we must defend values to sustain democracy.”
Later that day, Doggett critiqued President Trump’s economic policies by highlighting the increase in everyday item prices, despite Trump’s promise to lower prices on his first day in office. Doggett noted the new administration’s tariffs as the cause and alluded to Trump’s approval ratings as the lowest for any president within the first 100 days in over 80 years. “Trump said he’d lower prices on day one. Instead, we’re nearly 100 days in, and you’re paying more for everyday items thanks to his tariff tax. No wonder he has the lowest 100-day approval rating of any President in the past 80 years.”
Doggett also referenced remarks made by former Anti-Defamation League director Abe Foxman during a Holocaust Remembrance Day event at the Capitol. Foxman, a Holocaust survivor, expressed reverberations from his experiences in response to contemporary issues such as book bans and street abductions. “Former @ADL director Abe Foxman sounded the alarm with powerful remarks during a Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration at the Capitol: ‘As a [Holocaust] survivor, my antenna quivers when I see books being banned, when I see people being abducted in the streets…'”
Doggett, a native of Austin and a University of Texas at Austin alumnus, has consistently engaged in national discussions reflecting his long-held commitment to public service.
