Lloyd Doggett, U.S. Congressman representing Texas’ 37th district since 1995 and a longtime Austin resident, used his social media platform on July 17, 2025 to address issues surrounding voting rights, congressional redistricting, and public broadcasting funding.
In his first post of the day, Doggett reflected on the late Rep. John Lewis and linked contemporary voting rights challenges to ongoing political actions in Texas: “Today, we honor the legacy of my friend and former deskmate, Rep. John Lewis.
Five years after his passing, the fight for voting rights remains essential to democracy, especially as Trump and Gov. Abbott ramp up redistricting efforts to silence true representation for https://t.co/3z6L2xyt7t” (July 17, 2025).
Later that afternoon, Doggett accused former President Donald Trump of working with Texas Governor Greg Abbott to alter congressional districts in favor of Republicans: “Trump fears accountability, which losing his majority in Congress would bring, so he tapped Gov. Abbott to find him 5 new Republican seats in Texas by denying true representation for communities of color.
Trump is desperate to maintain his grip on power, free of any restraint by https://t.co/sXy1jBoJfl” (July 17, 2025).
In a third post that evening addressing federal media funding debates, Doggett wrote: “Public broadcasting is crucial to keeping Americans across the country informed and engaged. Something the Trump regime doesn’t want, so they can continue to spread lies and misinformation.
I strongly oppose GOP efforts to claw back these funds, which Congress previously https://t.co/XNCIfmLdlJ” (July 17, 2025).
Doggett’s career has spanned several decades; he replaced J.J. Pickle in Congress in 1995 after serving in the Texas Senate from 1973 to 1985. Born in Austin in 1946 and educated at the University of Texas at Austin—where he earned both his BA and JD—Doggett has maintained strong ties to both state and national legislative matters throughout his tenure.
