Lloyd Doggett, U.S. Congressman representing Texas’ 37th district and longtime Austin resident, recently shared a series of posts on social media addressing national security, international relations, and local public service.
On July 18, 2025, Doggett highlighted an opinion piece by former University of Texas Chancellor Admiral Bill McRaven. In his post, Doggett stated: “Important op-ed by former UT Chancellor Admiral Bill McRaven, who rightly warns that firing diplomats and dismantling USAID jeopardizes our national security. As the military leader who oversaw the Bin Laden raid, Admiral McRaven knows about keeping Americans safe. I agree with”.
The following day, July 19, 2025, Doggett marked the anniversary of political change in Bangladesh with members of the Bangladeshi American community in Austin. He wrote: “Pleased to join my friend and fellow Austinite Rashed Islam and other Bangladeshi Americans to commemorate one year after the extraordinary uprising that toppled autocrat Sheikh Hasina. The U.S. and Bangladesh have long shared a strong trading and investment relationship, now”.
On July 20, 2025, Doggett paid tribute to Bill Spelman following his passing: “Saddened by the passing of my friend Bill Spelman—a dedicated public servant and tireless advocate for equity who helped shape Austin for the better. From City Council to the LBJ School, Bill brought intellect, integrity, and heart to everything he did. Our community is stronger”.
Doggett has represented Texas’s 37th District in Congress since 1995 after succeeding J.J. Pickle. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in the Texas Senate from 1973 to 1985. Born in Austin in 1946 and currently residing there at age 76, Doggett is also an alumnus of the University of Texas at Austin where he earned both his undergraduate degree in 1967 and a law degree in 1970.
