Lloyd Doggett, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 37th district, has recently expressed his views on several international matters through social media posts. Known for his active participation in political discourse, Doggett shared insights on issues concerning El Salvador, Russia, and Israel.
On June 17, 2025, Doggett criticized former President Donald Trump for allegedly supporting authoritarian measures by Nayib Bukele in El Salvador. In his tweet, he stated: “Trump empowers fellow authoritarian Bukele in El Salvador to escalate his repression. Bukele’s arrest of human rights lawyer Ruth López and targeting of the opposition, including Ronal Umaña, is disgraceful.” He urged the United States to advocate for the protection and release of those targeted by Bukele’s government.
Later that day, Doggett commented on Trump’s stance towards Russian President Vladimir Putin. He remarked: “Having already offered to appease Putin on most every question, never offering the least criticism of this war criminal, Trump urges more benefits for Putin…” This statement reflects Doggett’s disapproval of Trump’s perceived leniency towards Putin amidst ongoing conflicts involving Russia.
In another post from June 17, 2025, Doggett referenced an argument made by Jeremi Suri, a national security expert at UT Austin. He quoted Suri saying: “Israel cannot be naïve in its search for peace with those who want to destroy it…” This reflects concerns about Israel’s strategic approach to self-defense and peace negotiations.
Lloyd Doggett has served in Congress since 1995 after succeeding J.J. Pickle. Born in Austin in 1946 and a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with both a BA and JD degree, he continues to reside in his hometown while actively engaging in legislative duties.
