Lloyd Doggett, who has represented Texas’ 37th district in the U.S. Congress since 1995 and previously served in the Texas Senate, recently addressed several issues affecting Texans through a series of posts on social media. Doggett, an Austin native and graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, focused on hunger among children, federal funding for AmeriCorps partners, and support for Alzheimer’s research.
On July 15, 2025, Doggett criticized Governor Greg Abbott’s decision to veto a bill aimed at providing meals to children during summer months. He stated: “One in five Texas children are going hungry, yet Republican Gov. Greg Abbott cruelly vetoed a bill to provide meals during the summer months. An excellent op-ed from @lucymelcher on the harm this will cause.”
Later that day, Doggett highlighted actions taken by the previous presidential administration regarding federal funds designated for Texas AmeriCorps programs. He wrote: “The Trump admin blocked over $3.5M in congressionally approved funds to Texas AmeriCorps partners. That means Texans aren’t getting the support they need for healthcare, education, disaster relief & more. Together with TX colleagues, I’m demanding answers.” This post was published on July 15, 2025.
In another post dated July 15, 2025, Doggett discussed his meeting with representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association. He shared: “Great to see Romi, Jenny, and Chelsea from the Alzheimer’s Association. Important discussion on the urgent need to restore medical research funding that is bringing innovative early detection tests and treatments to give loved ones more time with their family members afflicted”.
Doggett continues his legislative work as a long-serving member of Congress representing central Texas communities after first being elected in 1995 following J.J. Pickle’s retirement. Born in Austin in 1946 and educated at the University of Texas at Austin (BA ’67; JD ’70), he remains active both locally and nationally.
