Joaquin Castro, a U.S. Congressman representing Texas’ 20th district since 2013, recently expressed his concerns on social media regarding actions taken by government officials and their implications for democracy and public safety. Castro, who has served in Congress following a decade in the Texas House of Representatives, shared his views through a series of tweets addressing local and national issues.
On June 11, 2025, Castro criticized Governor Abbott’s decision to deploy the National Guard. He stated that “We are grateful that Mayor Nirenberg and Chief McManus are directing local law enforcement to protect the First Amendment rights and safety of everyone. By needlessly deploying the National Guard, Governor Abbott is escalating tensions rather than promoting safety and calm.”
In another tweet from the same day, Castro encouraged peaceful gatherings against actions he deemed undemocratic by President Trump. He asserted that “Our community will not be intimidated, and we encourage everyone to gather peacefully against President Trump’s unlawful, undemocratic actions: ignoring court orders, weaponizing federal agencies against his perceived enemies, and tearing apart immigrant families.”
On June 12, 2025, Castro further commented on what he perceives as authoritarian tendencies within Donald Trump’s administration.
