Joaquin Castro, a U.S. Congressman representing Texas’ 20th district, has expressed his concerns on social media regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Serving in Congress since 2013 and previously a member of the Texas House of Representatives, Castro addressed issues surrounding mass starvation and political tensions in the region.
On May 8, 2025, Castro stated that “Many, including thousands of children, are starving. Intentional mass starvation is a war crime.” This comment highlights the severe conditions faced by civilians in conflict zones and calls attention to international humanitarian laws.
In another post from the same day, he revealed his participation with nearly 100 colleagues in urging action against Israeli policies affecting Gaza. He tweeted: “I joined nearly 100 colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to demand that the Israeli Government stop its months-long blockade of food and aid to Gaza.” This reflects efforts within Congress to address ongoing blockades impacting essential supplies.
Additionally, Castro acknowledged previous statements against violence by Hamas and expressed support for Israel’s right to self-defense. He noted: “We have repeatedly denounced Hamas’ brutality on October 7th, met with hostage families and demanded the release of all hostages, and supported Israel’s self-defense over the years.” These remarks indicate a balanced approach towards condemning acts of violence while advocating for humanitarian relief.
Joaquin Castro was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1974 and continues to reside there today. A Stanford University graduate with a BA earned in 1996 and a JD from Harvard University acquired in 2000, he has been actively involved in politics since his early career.
