Joaquin Castro, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 20th district since 2013, recently shared his views on several significant issues through social media posts. Castro, who has a long-standing connection with San Antonio and holds degrees from Stanford University and Harvard University, addressed topics ranging from military partnerships to state legislation and national budget concerns.
On June 3, 2025, Castro emphasized the longstanding partnership between San Antonio and the Department of Defense. He urged Secretary Hegseth to consider establishing Joint Base San Antonio as the headquarters for a proposed consolidated Western Hemisphere command. “For decades, San Antonio has cultivated a unique partnership with the Department of Defense to support the military’s success.”
The following day, June 4, 2025, Castro criticized a lawsuit related to in-state tuition in Texas. He described it as “meritless, cruel, and vindictive,” noting that Republicans in Texas had created this program in 2001 to ensure tax-paying individuals could receive benefits regardless of their status. “This lawsuit is meritless, cruel, and vindictive.”
Later on June 4th, Castro commented on a Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score regarding a Republican budget bill. He highlighted its potential negative impacts: an increase of $2.4 trillion in debt and loss of healthcare access for 16 million Americans while costs for families continue to rise. “This CBO score shows how grim the impacts of the Republican budget bill will be.”
Joaquin Castro was born in San Antonio in 1974 and has been actively involved in politics since serving in the Texas House of Representatives from 2003 until his election to Congress.
