Rep. Pat Fallon has reintroduced the Safeguard American Innovation Act, aiming to enhance the protection of U.S. technology against foreign threats, particularly from China. In a statement, Rep. Fallon emphasized the importance of this legislation in light of recent cyberattacks that have highlighted vulnerabilities within U.S. defense and IT systems.
“Reintroducing the ‘Safeguard American Innovation Act’ is crucial for protecting U.S. technology and countering foreign threats, especially from China,” said Rep. Fallon. The proposed legislation seeks to mitigate these risks by preventing the Department of Defense from engaging in contracts with companies that have connections to China and could potentially compromise national security.
Rep. Fallon pointed out that “China’s laws require companies to share sensitive technology, including software source code.” He further explained that by prohibiting contracts with entities operating in China, those funded by the People’s Republic of China (PRC), or those granting China access to critical code, the bill aims to fortify U.S. IT infrastructure and protect technological assets.
“This legislation is vital for safeguarding American innovation, ensuring military safety, and preserving U.S. technological leadership,” he added. Rep. Fallon urged swift action to address these modern threats to national security.
